Why is Phonemic Awareness Important?
- Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds
- Phonemic Awareness activities are oral language activities where children manipulate sounds and explore language
- Phonemic Awareness prepares children for phonics instruction, it does not involve the use of letter names or print
- There are five levels of Phonemic Awareness

Why is Phonemic Awareness Important?
- Phonemic Awareness is the most powerful determinant of the likelihood of future reading failure
- The performance of kindergarten students in phonemic awareness can predict their levels of spelling and reading as many as 11 years later
- Children with underdeveloped phonemic awareness skills in kindergarten are among the poorest readers in later years.
