Kindergarten Reading
Students receive 90 minutes of core reading instruction within the kindergarten classroom. Additional small group reading instruction, with the kindergarten reading specialist, is also provided to many students to help meet their instructional needs. Research based curriculum and strategies are utilized throughout our reading program. A strong emphasis is placed on the areas of phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, passage understanding, and vocabulary.
Students that participate in small group reading meet with the reading specialist for approximately 30 minutes each day. Groups are flexible and limited to no more than six students at a time. Students are selected for participation in small group reading based upon classroom performance and data collected from grade level assessments.
